Combining Service and Learning
Service-learning integrates community service into a traditional academic curriculum. Courses that have a service component help students connect material learned in class and experiences acquired in their placements. "For Your Consideration..." (FYC) # 13, produced by the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill helps interested instructors to identify how service learning may relate to course goals, how to develop community service placements, how to bring service into the classroom, develop an evaluation system, and establish criteria for selecting students who are most likely to be appropriate candidates for this type of pedagogical tool.
