An exemption in copyright law that allows the text of books to be freely available to the visually impaired has prompted a new web-based service for the blind: Bookshare.org. Subscribers must fax in a disability affidavit and pay $50/year for the service, which allows users to file-share scanned text from (currently) over 7500 books. The electronic text can be easily fed into text-to-speech software programs. |
