MERLOT is an organization made up of leading higher education systems, consortia, and institutions. MERLOT provides high quality digital learning materials to faculty members who are using the world wide web for both traditional and distance learning courses. It is a "gateway" to modularized learning materials that faculty can incorporate into their own courses. Learning materials posted in MERLOT are primarily interactive simulations, animations, and tutorials that will be peer-reviewed and tested in appropriate educational settings. MERLOT's mission is to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning by expanding the quantity and quality of peer-reviewed online learning materials that can be easily incorporated into faculty designed courses.

The University of North Carolina is one of the founding members of the MERLOT initiative and participated in the pilot rollout of the program in Spring 2000. The MERLOT project is still in its infancy but maps to a critical emerging area of e-learning, namely evaluation of, and share access to, modular e-learning components that are of the highest quality. Coordination of the MERLOT project within UNC has been managed by the new UNC Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative, working closely with the divisions of Academic Affairs, Information Resources and University Schools Programs.
